Beloved Gray Brothers Cafeteria in Mooresville to Close, Building Listed for Sale

After more than 80 cherished years, the iconic Gray Brothers Cafeteria in Mooresville, Indiana, has announced its closure.

The property at 555 S. Indiana Street has been listed for $10 million, signaling the end of an era for a local institution renowned for its homestyle Midwestern meals.

Founded in 1944 by Forest Gray, the cafeteria began as a humble restaurant and expanded over decades before moving to its current location in the 1960s.

The building that now houses the beloved eatery was constructed in 1979 and has been a fixture of the Mooresville community, drawing diners with favorites like fried chicken and pies.

Third-generation co-owner Jason Gray explained that rising operational costs and the ambition to reimagine the business model prompted the family’s decision.

The Gray Brothers brand recently ventured into carry-out dining with success, including a baked goods location in Avon, Indiana.

This new direction, along with the interest generated through franchising opportunities, has the family planning future locations in areas with greater foot traffic and growth potential.

Though specific plans for reopening have not yet been disclosed, Jason Gray reassured fans that the Gray Brothers name will continue.

“We won’t be at this Mooresville site, but we will be reopening and moving forward,” Gray shared, expressing optimism about the future.

For now, the cafeteria remains open and operating on its regular schedule until the sale of the property is finalized.

The Gray family expressed heartfelt gratitude to Mooresville and their loyal customers for nearly a century of support.

“We thank God for His blessings and are forever thankful to the Mooresville community for being part of this incredible journey,” a statement from the family said.

While the community bids farewell to the cafeteria’s current chapter, the Gray Brothers legacy promises to live on in new and exciting ways.
