GREENFIELD, Ind. — Voters in Hancock County re-elected a man as a county commissioner who up until recently was sitting in a Las Vegas jail cell accused of sexual assault.

John Jessup faces a long time in jail for sexually assaulting a woman at a hotel in Las Vegas back in January. It turns out that the woman he assaulted was his own daughter, Rachel Jessup.

She came forward and told the Greenfield Daily Reporter that her father got drunk and pressured her to drink a lot that night as well, so much so that she passed out. It was after she came to that she realized she’d been touched inappropriately by Jessup.

Jessup reached a plea agreement with prosecutors in Vegas in which he is admitting to lesser sexual assault charges than he had been facing. Had the case gone to trial he would be looking at 20 years to life in prison. He’ll be sentenced in April of 2025.

Jessup has told Hancock County leaders that he will step down from his position on the county commission as soon as he is sworn in due to state laws that make it illegal for convicted felons to hold public office.
