INDIANAPOLIS — You may remember learning that a special judge ruled against an effort to broaden abortion access last month. Well, the ACLU of Indiana and other groups have filed an appeal to that ruling.

In a statement, the organizations said current abortion restrictions are “putting pregnant people’s health at serious risk, leading to preventable tragedies and even death.”

Planned Parenthood had been among those trying to allow for more medical exceptions to the state’s ban. It was also hoping its lawsuit would make it possible for facilities other than hospitals to perform abortions.

Now, the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, All-Options, Inc., and Dr. Amy Caldwell are appealing the denied request to “expand and clarify the limited and ambiguous health and life exception to Indiana’s criminal abortion ban.”

The case is now heading to the Indiana Court of Appeals.
