STATEWIDE—There are 92 counties in Indiana. More than half of them are under burn bans.

“The conditions are so dry. We’re just in this situation where it’s not the best idea to burn anything. The good news is that winds aren’t super strong, so that will keep it from being significant fire spread. But that can be enough with the condition that fires have the potential to get out of control,” said Randy Bowers, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows most of Indiana under “moderate drought” while some areas of the state are in “severe drought.” When severe drought happens, crop or pasture loss is likely, water shortages are common, and sometimes water restrictions can be imposed depending on the county.

Bowers says there might be some light rain in the coming days.

“Friday, late on Sunday, and then into early next week there could be some light rain, but these are not really good rain chances with the opportunity to improve anything. What we really need is an all-day soaking rain, but that doesn’t appear to be the case for a while,” said Bowers.

One thing you can expect, though, is temperatures to cool down next week.

“The average high temperature for this time of year is about 78 degrees. Once we get into next week, we will see some cooler temperatures move in. We should be into the 70s for much of next week,” said Bowers.
