INDIANAPOLIS — Denying children the education they deserve is a step backward, according to Jennifer McCormick, the Democratic nominee for Indiana Governor.

Speaking with WIBC’s Tony Katz, McCormick said the state lacks transparency in the school choice admissions process.

“That’s what it is in Indiana; it’s school choice, not parent choice,” McCormick said. “For us, it’s about making sure that Indiana students have the rigor and transferable skills to be competitive in the workforce.”

Last month, McCormick unveiled her five-pillar education plan, focusing on early childhood care and universal pre-K, school accountability, transferable skills, teacher pay, and local autonomy for schools.

McCormick argued that school choice needs more accountability and that schools are not being transparent with their admissions.

“I’ve heard so many stories from across Indiana,” she said. “I continue to hear it, and I firmly believe that if we’re going to have school choice, we need to have some quality guardrails so that parents know what that means. Are those teachers licensed? Are those schools of quality choice?”
