INDIANAPOLIS–An improperly secured mattress caused an accident that sent three people to nearby hospitals with injuries on the south side of Indianapolis Wednesday.

At about 4:20 pm Wednesday afternoon, emergency responders were called to the scene of a serious crash on I-65 northbound at the 101-mile marker (County Line Road exit near Greenwood). They found three vehicles heavily damaged and three people injured.

State police say an SUV was going north on I-65 with a box spring mattress on its roof and was being followed by a car driven by a friend of the driver in the SUV when the mattress fell off the roof and landed in the center lane.

The driver of the car stopped in the center lane behind the mattress and the driver of the SUV pulled to the right shoulder. Police say both men got out and tried to pick up the mattress, but another car came along and hit the back of the car that had stopped in the center lane. That car then flew forward and hit both men who were getting the mattress.

A third car came along and hit the two crashed vehicles that were already on the road.

The two men who were hit and the driver of one of the vehicles were all taken to hospitals. The status of their injuries is unknown.
