SHELBYVILLE, Ind. –An Indiana State Trooper is in the hospital after his patrol car was hit Friday morning on I-74 in Shelby County.

Master Trooper Jeremy Basso was helping a construction crew at the 112-mile marker just before 3 a.m. when his car was rear-ended by an SUV. Basso’s police car, with emergency lights activated, was parked in a closed lane behind a crew of construction workers.

“The lane was blocked with barrels, signs, and flashing lights. The (SUV driver) drove through the barrels and ran into the back of Basso at highway speed,” said John Perrine, state police sergeant and public information officer. “Trooper Basso happened to be sitting behind workers that were outside their trucks working in the roadway. Thankfully, the vehicle hit the back of a police car and not a crowd of workers.”

ISP said the lane was closed for about a half-mile before the crash. Perrine said Basso did all he could to get free.

“Basso was able to get himself removed from the wreckage, but he was injured pretty severely. Once he got out of the car, he actually laid on the ground and called for help,” said Perrine.

Basso was taken to a hospital by Shelbyville EMS.

“He is awake, alert, and conscious. He is stable and his injuries are non-life-threatening,” said Perrine.

The SUV was a 2015 Ford Explorer. Police have identified the driver of the Explorer as 21-year-old Mason Durrett, of Indianapolis. Durrett has been preliminarily charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury.

“Officers conducting the investigation could smell an alcoholic beverage. Further tests, interviews, whatever it may be, revealed that the driver was intoxicated and he has been arrested. He’s been taken to the Shelby County Jail,” said Perrine.

The charges are preliminary and merely a probable cause for arrest. Formal charges will be determined by the Shelby County Prosecutor’s Office.
