INDIANAPOLIS — A woman was fatally shot outside a home near an elementary school Wednesday.

Hours later, a man was found dead inside the home in what police believe is a murder-suicide.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was sent to the report of a person shot while medics were sent to a report of the unsafe scene of a stabbing just before 2:40 p.m. Wednesday at a home southwest of the intersection of East 51st Street and North Keystone Avenue.

The woman died at a hospital, said William A. Young with IMPD’s public information office.

Police previously said someone may have a gun in the home. After they entered the home, police found a man dead inside. Police did not immediately say how the man inside the home died or whether a suspect is at large.

Young said investigators think the woman was shot outside the home near a vehicle.

The standoff blocked neighbors in for hours, some said officers used their cars and backyard playsets as hideouts as SWAT negotiated before they knew the man in the home was dead.

Police have not said anything about who the man and woman are. Marion County Coroner’s Office will release the names of the man and woman after family members are notified.
