“I don’t agree with everything Sen. Todd Young says or does,” is a statement that many Hoosiers could make, regardless of their political party. But there is no questioning whether he is right in pushing for the International Olympic Committee to move the 2022 Winter Games out of Beijing. China does not deserve our love nor our respect, and they do not deserve the privilege of being an Olympic host nation.
The facts tell the story: Hong Kongers have been abused and imprisoned for wanting the very basics of freedom. China has been guilty – for years! – of intellectual property theft. Since the election of President Joe Biden, they have engaged in the intimidation of Taiwan; flying fighter jets into their airspace as a reminder that even though the Taiwanese people yearn for freedom, China is willing to do what they deem necessary to keep Taiwan compliant and docile. Translation: China will kill as many Taiwanese people as necessary to maintain control of them.
While the NBA may have been unwilling to talk about the abuse of Hong Kongers, no American can turn their back to the horrific abuse of the Uighur Muslims. The men? Bound, blindfolded, and sent to labor camps. Which can also be called re-education camps; stripping them of their heritage and working a 24/7 brainwashing campaign to make them forget who they were (are,) and love China only and completely.
The women? Some in the re-education camps, others far away from their husbands. In both cases, as explained in an expose from the BBC, they are raped daily at the hands of the Communist Chinese Party.
The problem, of course, is Communism, not Chinese people. Sen. Young makes the right distinction when he writes, “The Chinese Communist Party’s horrific record of human rights abuses should not be ignored and party leadership rewarded by allowing them to host the 2022 Olympic Winter Games. The Olympic Games are about coming together and showcasing the best athletes around the world. The Chinese Communist Party’s actions in Xinjiang, Hong Kong, and elsewhere make such unity impossible. The International Olympic Committee should abandon plans for the 2022 Games in China and seek out a new host country that respects the most basic human rights.”
Young has been joined by Florida Sens. Rick Scott and Marco Rubio, Indiana’s Junior Senator Mike Braun, and others. He should be joined by a unified America, and the globe, as well.
Communism is an abomination that can never be trusted, nor should it ever be rewarded or glorified. China does not deserve to host the Olympic games. The world – starting with Indiana – should say so.
