CAMBRIDGE, Mass.  —  Moderna says its coronavirus vaccine appears to provide some protection against new variants from the U.K. and South Africa.

Early testing shows antibodies triggered by the vaccine can recognize and fight the new variants.  However, Moderna says it’s working on a booster shot to fight the South African strain as researchers say the current vaccine generated a weaker response against it.

The current vaccine will have to undergo multiple studies to ensure its efficacy against the new variants.

Last week, a new study indicated that Pfizer’s vaccine appeared to be effective against the new strain from the U.K.
