STATEWIDE–Hoosiers age 80 and older are now eligible to get the coronavirus vaccine, but you are being urged to be patient when signing up to get it.

On Friday, the Indiana Department of Health said “high interest in COVID-19 vaccines” has caused slowdowns to their 211 system and the state’s vaccine registration site, but both systems are still working.

The site, https://ourshot.in.gov, is designed to put visitors into a holding queue, but that only happens when volume is high. That can mean longer wait times or an error message. If that happens, you should check back at a later time to access the system.

“We are gratified by the high interest in vaccine registration for our most vulnerable Hoosiers and encourage everyone to be patient,” said State Health Commissioner Kris Box. “We anticipated these scenarios on the first day and have a system in place to address them as quickly as possible.”

If you are having difficulty registering online, you can call one of Indiana’s Area Agencies on Aging for help. A caregiver or loved one can also make an appointment on behalf of an eligible senior.

At least one vaccine clinic will be located in each county in Indiana. Vaccines are free, but insurance by charged an administrative fee.

Appointments for the second vaccine does will be made at the clinic when the first dose is administered.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb said Wednesday people age 80 and older account for less than 4% of the state’s population, but represent more than 19% of those in the hospital and more than half of the coronavirus deaths in Indiana.
