STATEWIDE--There is a risk for severe weather Monday afternoon and evening.

“It will be somewhere in the 5 to 9 pm timeframe where we could see strong to severe thunderstorms ahead of a cold front that’s moving into the area. Damaging winds would be the primary concern with these storms, but just with some of what we have going on in the atmosphere, there also could be some large hail and tornadoes,” said Mike Ryan, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.

Ryan says the next weather system will move into Indiana from Illinois.

“They’ll move into the Wabash Valley by the mid-afternoon and that’s likely where they’ll be the most intense. They’ll move over towards Indianapolis and then weaken as they move east,” said Ryan.

Western Indiana is under a “slight risk” for severe weather. That implies that well-organized severe thunderstorms are expected but in relatively small numbers/coverage, or a small chance of a more significant severe event. Other parts of the state are in a “marginal risk”, which means the storms will likely be more limited in duration than they would be under a “slight risk.”

Temperatures are also expected to drop in the coming days.

“There won’t be a whole lot of change as we get into tomorrow and Wednesday, but we will cool down into the 60s for high temperatures on Saturday and Sunday,” said Ryan.

Ryan expects temperatures to continue that trend of highs in the 60s into next week. Low temperatures are expected to be in the 40s and 50s.
