JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. — After some setbacks, a southern Indiana man may finally have his day in court.

It was back in September of 2014 when Joseph Oberhansley was arrested for killing his ex-girlfriend.

Oberhansley broke into the home of Tammy Jo Blanton, his ex-girlfriend. Prosecutors say he murdered her and began eating parts of her body.

Originally, Oberhansley was deemed not competent to stand trial. At the time, defense lawyers said he “consistently appeared irrational and expressed bizarre thoughts at hearings.” Now, defense lawyers have changed their tune.

Defense lawyers and prosecutors reported to Clark Circuit Judge Vicki Carmichael that Oberhansley had regained his competency and is able to stand trial.

The jury selection is scheduled to begin on September 8, nearly six years to the date of the murder.

He was charged with burglary, murder and rape. If convicted, he could be sentenced to death.
