(FISHERS, Ind.) — Republicans will formally name House Speaker Brian Bosma’s successor Wednesday.

Fishers attorney Chris Jeter won the Republican primary for Bosma’s seat, and will be the only candidate in a Republican caucus to serve the three months until Election Day. Voters will choose between Jeter and community volunteer Pam Dechert for a full term in November.

Jeter says the coronavirus pandemic and the resulting budget shortfall has overtaken the issues he thought he’d be working on when he got in the race, but says he’ll still bring a small-government conservative viewpoint to the House. He says that includes the state’s efforts to contain the pandemic. He says Governor Holcomb has done his best to protect the public during the outbreak, but says, “We have to be mindful of the fact that our freedoms don’t stop in difficult times.”

“All government expansions of power have been based on the best of intentions,” Jeter says.

Bosma resigned last month after 34 years in the House, including a record 12 as speaker.
