Police: Man Kills Wife in Haubstadt, Claims She Was Involved in Mexican Cartel

HAUBSTADT, Ind.–A man accused of shooting and killing his wife and two of her family members last month in Gibson County, now says through his attorney, that his wife’s family was heavily involved in a Mexican drug cartel and that her children were trying to take his house and money.
The killings happened in the Scottsdale Acres area of Haubstadt. Patrick Waite, 77, was one of the people who called 911, telling dispatchers he had killed his wife Alma and two other people.
Now Waite’s attorney tells 14 News that a lawsuit has been filed alleging that Waite was a victim of elder abuse.
He met his wife online after his first wife died during COVID. She and Waite married five months after and soon after that some of her family members moved in.
The lawsuit states that Waite was sleeping with a gun under his pillow after his stepsons threatened his life and after he saw them commit violent acts against several people, including children. It says the sons and wife were involved with the Sinaloa Cartel.
The lawsuit also claims that Waite was tricked into signing over his house and estate and that his wife blocked his children when they tried to warn him about the con job.
Waite admitted to police that he shot the four family members, killing three, saying he wasn’t proud of it.
His attorney, Jonathan Danks, said he believes the information will vindicate his client at trial.
