JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind.–A Johnson County woman who believed she was God was found not responsible by reason of insanity for shooting and killing her friend’s husband.

Alicia Haupt won’t go to prison for the murder due to her mental illness. She shot and killed 35-year-old Jacob Harville on February 5, 2024 in Urmeyville. That’s an unincorporated community in Johnson County. Police say Haupt told a Johnson County Sheriff’s Deputy she was walking near a blue GMC Sierra and said it was “the man who I shot in the face’s truck.”

Officers say Haupt went on to claim she was “God” and that she just killed Satan. Haupt said she had to do that “before he killed us all.” Haupt told police she was “best friends” with Harville’s wife and lived with the couple.

Police say Haupt shot Harville in the head in front of his mother and then pointed the gun at his mother, but the gun jammed. She later tossed the gun in a ditch.

The judge ruled that Haupt couldn’t differentiate between right and wrong at the time of the shooting.

“Sufficient mental capacity to understand that what they did is wrong. Both doctors say she didn’t have that,” said Johnson County Prosecutor Lance Hamner.

Harville’s family expressed outrage at the outcome of the verdict in the bench trial.

“When something happens like this to a loved one, you want justice. When it comes back that you can’t get justice because the law doesn’t allow it, that’s very frustrating,” said Hamner.

Haupt will be committed to a mental health facility following the ruling.

“Then the mental health facility will continue to monitor her after she’s committed,” said Hamner.

The judge also denied a state request for a firearms enhancement because she was not convicted of murder.
