INDIANAPOLIS — If you are planning to buy jewelry or designer items for your significant other this Valentine’s Day, police say you should make sure you are getting the real thing.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers apparently found two shipments of counterfeit jewelry in Indianapolis last week.

The orders came from China, and included items like rings, necklaces, and charms that were branded with Tiffany and Co., Cartier, Chanel, and other designer logos. But, they were all knock-off items.

If they had been real, the CBP says the items would have been worth about $5.2 million. Instead, they were seized for “infringing on the designers’ protected trademarks.”

In order to protect yourself from these types of scams, you are encouraged to purchase items directly from designers or authorized retailers. You should also do research in advance, to know the value of the product you are planning to buy.
