Snowfall this weekend

INDIANAPOLIS — Light snow is expected to start Thursday night and continue into Friday, impacting travel. More snow is forecasted for the weekend and into next week.

“If you are planning on driving late tonight or early tomorrow morning, you may want to allow yourself a little extra time because roads may be tricky,” said Jason Puma from the National Weather Service. “We’ll see snow amounts in the Indy Metro area around an inch. If you go further north, places like Lafayette, Kokomo, and Muncie will see heavier amounts.”

Forecasters are also monitoring a storm that could bring several inches of snow from Sunday into Monday. Puma said they are still tracking the storm, as it is in the Pacific, and a more precise forecast will be available Saturday.

“Early Saturday, we’ll have a better idea of what those snow amounts could look like and whether we need winter weather watches or winter storm warnings,” Puma added.

A snow watch means snow is possible, while a snow warning means heavy snow is imminent or occurring.

“Once we get into a spot where we’re going to get six inches or more, we’ll go into a warning situation,” Puma said.

He also noted that temperatures will stay below freezing for 7-10 days.
