INDIANAPOLIS — If you have been wondering when – or if – the former Marion County Jail 1 is going to be demolished, you may be interested to know that a date has finally been set.
Indy Mayor Joe Hogsett announced Thursday that demo will begin before the end of this year and should be completed by next summer.
He said, “In a year’s time, this site will be ready for a new purpose: to bring continued revitalization and economic growth to our city’s urban core.”
All of the departments that had been using the space have been moved to the Community Justice Campus, which first opened in 2022. Pre-demo efforts on the inside of the building started in October.
While crews work on the site of the former jail, you may notice road restrictions along Alabama and Maryland streets. All total, the project is expected to cost about $4 million.
City-County Councilor Kristin Jones said it “represents our dedication to safer neighborhoods and vibrant public space.”
