JASPER COUNTY, Ind. — The Indiana State Police Regional Dispatch Center in Lowell got a call about a shooting on I-65 near Rensselaer late Friday around 8:00.  

The caller said someone shot him while he was driving southbound and was hit. The suspect drove off, but the caller provided to tell police what the car looked like.  

Law enforcement from the Lafayette District, Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, and Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department found the suspect’s vehicle further south on I-65, near mile marker 166, south of Lafayette. Officers conducted a felony stop, detaining three people in the car and finding a 9mm Glock handgun inside. All three were taken to the Lafayette Post, where the Indiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division from Lowell joined in on the investigation.  

19-year-old Dwayne Lumont Johnson Jr., who is from Country Club Hills, Illinois is facing several charges:  

  • Attempted Murder (Level 1 Felony)  
  • Aggravated Battery (Level 3 Felony)  
  • Two counts of Battery with a Deadly Weapon (Level 5 Felony)  
  • Criminal Recklessness (Level 6 Felony).  

Johnson was taken to a hospital in Lafayette and then was taken to a hospital in Indianapolis for additional care where he is recovering. The other two people in the car were released without being charged.  

All suspects were proven innocent until proven guilty in court.
