HAMMOND, Ind. — Would you pay money to watch two Indiana politicians duke it out in a celebrity boxing match?

The mayor of Hammond is volunteering.

Mayor Tom McDermott, Jr., a Democrat, appeared on the “Left of Center” podcast Tuesday, and formally challenged Indiana Republican Senator Todd Young to a match at the Hammond Civic Center.

“He’s soft,” McDermott said. “He was a Marine. I’m not saying he’d be easy. I think he’s younger than me too…but I would freakin’ love to fight Todd Young in a celebrity boxing match.”

McDermott even suggested they make it less of a boxing match and more of a mixed-martial arts contest.

“Let’s throw a cage up,” he said. “I was a wrestler. I’ll bust out my old wrestling moves and mess him up.”

McDermott says the two politicians could raise $100,000 for charity for the fight.

He made the comments during the podcast after discussing the rumors that McDermott might be interested in running for Young’s seat in Senate.

Young has not responded.
