CARMEL, Ind. — A man was shot and killed by police officers in Carmel after they say he pointed a “high powered rifle” at them during a standoff on Sunday.

Lt. Tim Byrne with Carmel Police said they received the call Sunday afternoon about a man, 60-year-old Keith Scales, who may be suicidal along at a home along West Main Street near the Spring Mill Road roundabout.

“Our officers arrived and we surrounded the house, set up a perimeter around the house, and began evacuating people from nearby residences,” he said. “During the incident, the individual set out of the house holding what we believed to be a high powered rifle.”

That’s when Scales started communicating back and forth with officers.

“The individual raised the rifle towards officers and officers engaged the threat,” Byrne added. “The individual was struck and taken to 86th street St. Vincent Hospital but did not survive his injuries.”

Byrne could not say how many times Scales was shot. He said during the standoff the man had fired shots from inside the home to the outside, with some of those shots hitting a squad car.

Carmel police have turned the investigation over to Fishers police in order to “ensure impartiality” in the investigation.
