INDIANAPOLIS –Two people are in the hospital after a fire at a west side apartment complex Wednesday morning.

Firefighters were called at around 7:30 a.m. to the Meadow Lake Apartments on Lupine Terrace near West 34th Street and High School Road.

A 42-year-old woman and her 11-year-old son were rescued from the second floor of the building and taken to the hospital in critical condition. The woman later died of her injuries.

“They were able to bring the child to the window. Other firefighters grabbed the child out of the window and pulled the child down. They transported the child to Riley (Children’s Hospital),” said Indianapolis Fire Department Battalion Chief Rita Reith. “They located the adult female and brought her out the window and down the stairs.”

Reith credited Speedway Ladder 88 for conducting the rescue.

Sixteen people are without homes because of the fire. Reith says the building is a complete loss.

“There’s been a lot of loss here,” said Reith.

They are trying to figure out what caused the fire.
