AVON, Ind. — A second child in Avon is showing symptoms of the coronavirus, which is why school district leaders have decided to close all schools in the district until after spring break.

The second student has not tested positive for the virus just yet, but another Avon student has already tested positive for the coronavirus.

“The Hendricks County health department and Avon Community Schools are working closely to determine the web of individuals who have been in contact with the two students,” said Avon Supt. Maggie Hoerneman. “The web has grown very large.”

She said the best course of action is still to close all Avon schools until after the end of spring break, which is April 6th.

In all, four people in Indiana are sick with the virus, one person in Marion County contracted the virus in Boston. A person in Hendricks County has a similar story. The aforementioned child in Avon has it in Hendricks County and then a man in Noble County is also in isolation with the virus.

“We have tested 30 individuals throughout the state and only have these four positives,” said Dr. Kristina Box, Indiana’s State Health Commissioner. “Every other test has been negative. All who have tested positive are stable and doing well.”

Box again stressed that if you are sick whether it be the coronavirus or any other illness, such as the flu, you need to stay home to keep it from spreading. With the virus now affecting students in Indiana, State Supt. Jennifer McCormick is giving credit where credit is due.

“I want to thank Dr. Box,” she said. “She has been amazing to work with and her entire team. They’ve been very inclusive in working with the State Department of Education. She is also sending the message that this is serious but no need to panic.”

McCormick also gave props to Gov. Eric Holcomb in for his response so far to the coronavirus in Indiana. Holcomb declared a public health emergency for the state after the first case was confirmed in Indiana. That declaration opens the state up to additional funding should it need it.
