SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Hundreds of State Democrats in Illinois gathered in the state’s capitol for a gathering of the Illinois Democratic County Chair’s Association.

Among those invited to speak was South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg. Buttigieg has gained popularity among Democrats throughout the United States in the last two years. He spoke on a plethora of topics, including his feelings towards Indiana’s former Governor and current Vice-President Mike Pence.

“This Vice-President, one heartbeat away from the oval office, is a social extremist the likes of which our country has not known in national office,” Buttigieg said. “Trust me, I know him.”

He also said Pence believes “cigarettes don’t cause cancer” and that the Disney movie Mulan is “dangerous liberal propaganda.” Buttigieg even to a swipe at Illinois’ Republican Governor Bruce Rauner for calling Pence “one of the great leaders of American history.”

Buttigieg touched on how the city of South Bend has seen a drastic turn around over the last seven years he as been Mayor. He said that is all thanks to Democrat leadership and that a “Blue Wave” will help transition that success to a national level.

Finally, he mentioned the fact that he got married two months ago.

“I live with the knowledge that there are people in power today who would if they could deny my family the right, legally, to even exist for the simple reason that my spouse is a husband and not a wife,” Buttigieg said.

Buttigieg stopped short of saying he would run for any national office anytime soon, but that he would see Democrats on the campaign trail come November.
