INDIANAPOLIS— A man accused of running from police in Indianapolis during a traffic stop was eventually arrested, but it’s what happened to him afterwards that has made him upset.
On October 7, a video taken by Bryant Patrick Jr.’s girlfriend appears to show Patrick being shoved into the ground by police while he was handcuffed.
“I was not denying the fact I was wrong for running. I should not have ran,” Patrick said.
He says he took off because he felt threatened by officers after they pulled his cousin over for driving with a suspended license.
Patrick is accused of threatening the officers while in custody. The video shows the officers having a conversation with Patrick before the incident in question happens.
“Y’all were defiantly wrong for the way y’all handled me after I was detained,” Patrick said.
Court documents said Patrick received medical treatment on the scene, but Patrick said he never received medical treatment while detained by officers.
On Monday, a group of men supporting Patrick asked Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry to file charges against the officer. Curry’s office released the following statement:
We have been made aware that IMPD has a pending Internal Affairs investigation regarding officer conduct during the arrest in question. As is our usual course of business, we will review any investigation and additional information provided. Should we believe any actions arise to the level of criminal charges, we will pursue further action.
Since 2011 the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office has prosecuted 70 police officers for a variety of offenses. Prosecutor Curry personally prosecuted former Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy David Carrico for battery of a handcuffed man and successfully gained a felony conviction. He did so to send a statement that we hold ourselves as Prosecutors and law enforcement officers to a higher standard, knowing that the public has entrusted us with the paramount responsibility of their safety.
IMPD says the internal affairs division is handling the investigation now. The officer continues to do his job while the investigation happens.
“All I want is for this to never happen to anyone else ever again,” Patrick said.
