MUNCIE, Ind. — A Muncie man who saved his wife from a house fire in Muncie was unable to save himself.

Gary Smith, 33, died Wednesday morning when a fire broke out in the attic where he and his wife were staying, according to The Muncie Star Press.

Smith reportedly pushed his wife out of an attic window to safety, but didn’t follow her. Firefighters weren’t sure why he stayed behind, said The Star Press.

Police believe eight to 10 other people were also staying at the home on West Fifth Street. All of those people are said to have escaped unharmed. Three dogs also survived the blaze.

Fire investigators are still looking into what happened and have not determined what caused the fire.
