HARTFORD CITY, Ind. — A Hartford City man could spend six years in prison for beating a 10-year-old boy because he played with a broomstick.

Paul Kelley is charged with battery resulting resulting in bodily injury to a person under 14 years old, says the Muncie Star Press.

The boy told police Kelley knocked him down and punched him twice in the forehead and three times in the mouth. He and other witnesses said Kelley became angry because the boy was “playing with a broomstick.”

One of the witnesses said Kelley had his arm wrapped around the boy’s throat and kicked the boy in the chest.

The attack happened on Sunday at the Blackford County Senior Citizen Center. The boy was taken from there to the IU Health Blackford Hospital.
