INDIANAPOLIS — Republican State Senator Jim Merritt is expected to announce next month that he is running for Mayor of Indianapolis.
Merritt would join former City-County Councilor Jose Evans, as well as mason builder John Schmitz, who have formally announced they want to take on Democrat incumbent Mayor Joe Hogsett next year.
Merritt has served in the Indiana Senate since 1990. He has served as Chairman of the Senate Utilities Committee and has worked on tackling the state’s opioid and heroin crisis.
In the past when asked about running for the office, Merritt has said the city is in need of strong leadership.
