WASHINGTON, Ind. — At least 10,000 turkeys are dead after a barn fire in Daviess County.

The Washington Township Fire Department was called early Wednesday morning to a turkey barn a few miles south of the town of Washington.

Firefighters told WFIE in Evansville that when they arrived, the barn was engulfed in flames.

Most of the turkeys died in the blaze, but a few survived because they were moved to a different barn when the fire started, according to WFIE.

The turkey barn was destroyed but firefighters were able to protect two nearby barns from the flames.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
