SOUTH BEND, Ind. — A Democrat candidate for mayor of South Bend is behind bars after being charged with felony theft.

Will Smith, 32, turned himself in Tuesday at the St. Joseph County Jail after a warrant for his arrest was issued in Miami County.

Smith is accused of stealing a travel trailer from an RV dealer in Bunker Hill several days before he filed as a candidate for mayor, reports The South Bend Tribune

He is also suspected of stealing his repossessed SUV from an impound lot in Starke County. The case is under investigation by the Sheriff’s Department, but Smith has not been charged.

If convicted, Smith will be prohibited from holding elected office; however, his name will likely appear on the ballot in May. The deadline to withdraw from the May 7 primary has already passed, according to The Tribune.
