INDIANAPOLIS–He was convicted of raping and killing a woman from Indianapolis in 1998. Now Johnny Jones will be sentenced later this month.

Jones was convicted Thursday. In 2009, police collected evidence and submitted it for DNA testing. In 2015, they got a match.

Police say DNA evidence uncovered in 2015 linked Jones to the murder of Kenya Edwards, 26. Jones had already been in prison for an unrelated conviction in 2014. Jones had been in and out of prison for various crimes since the 1970s.

He’ll be sentenced for these crimes at 10 a.m. April 26th in Marion Superior Court.

On Nov. 5, 1998, officers found Edwards’ body partially burned inside a home that had been on fire on North Tacoma Avenue. That’s just east of North Keystone Avenue.

Edwards’ wrists and legs had been bound with electrical cords. Police said there was evidence of a fight inside and a broken window in the back of the home.

An autopsy determined Edwards’ cause of death was from thermal burns and smoke inhalation.
