CUMBERLAND, Ind. — The shooting death of a 12-year-old boy in Cumberland has now been ruled a homicide.

The Cumberland Metropolitan Police Department says officers found Jeremiah Cotton to be suffering from a gunshot wound at a home in the 11500 block of Dunshire Drive just before 1 a.m. Friday. Cotton was transported to Riley Hospital in “critical condition,” but later died.

Officers were then told by witnesses, ages 15 to 18, who were at the scene at the time of the shooting, that Cotton had picked up the firearm and accidentally shot himself. On Monday, the Marion County Coroner’s Office determined Jeremiah could not have shot himself and ruled his death a homicide.

An investigation continues. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will eventually make the final charging decisions in the case once it’s officially presented to them.
