12-Year-Old Dies in Accidental Shooting in Cumberland
CUMBERLAND, Ind. — Police in Cumberland are investigating a shooting where a 12-year-old boy died.
The incident happened early Friday morning in the 11500 block of Dunshire Drive. Officers responded to the residence just after 1 a.m. and found the boy with an apparent gunshot wound.
Police said the boy’s condition was initially “very critical.” He was later pronounced dead at an Indianapolis hospital.
The boy has since been identified as Jeremiah Cotton. According to Cumberland police, the boy was in an apartment with five other young people, with an 18-year-old being the oldest there at the time of the shooting. There were no adults present.
Witnesses told police that the boy picked up the gun and accidentally shot himself in the head.
An investigation is ongoing and no arrests had been made. The case will be reviewed by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
