STATEHOUSE–Indiana Governor Mike Braun signed two executive orders Wednesday focused on employing inmates after release and improving working conditions for correctional officers.

Executive Order 25-46 aims to reduce recidivism by improving reentry pathways for former inmates, emphasizing the importance of employment opportunities and stable housing. The order seeks to lower the reoffending rate by helping individuals find work and avoid homelessness.

Executive Order 25-47 focuses on improving employee retention within the Department of Correction by enhancing training, addressing job stress, and utilizing data to identify areas for improvement.

Governor Braun believes these measures will benefit both former inmates and correctional employees in Indiana.

Indiana Department of Correction employees oversee more than 24,000 inmates in 21 facilities, and more than 7,000 parolees.

Due to the demanding and sometimes dangerous nature of their work, correctional officers experience high levels of on-the-job stress and burnout. Braun says he wants to do the best he can to prevent that.
