INDIANAPOLIS—Former semi driver Bruce Pollard pleaded guilty but mentally ill, Monday, to reckless homicide and other charges in the July 14, crash on I-465 that killed Alanna Koons and her 18 month old daughters.

Pollard pleaded guilty but mentally ill to three counts of reckless homicide,(Level 5 Felonies), reckless operation of a vehicle in a highway work zone, Class A Misdemeanor), and seven counts of reckless driving (Class A Misdemeanor), said a spokesperson with the Marion County prosecutor’s office.

According to the plea agreement, Pollard failed to heed several warning signals and hit the back of Koons’s car, killing her and her daughters June and Ruby,

Police believe he was going 65 mph in a construction zone, where the speed was 45 mph.

Pollard at one time seemed oblivious to what had occurred, and asked authorities what hotel they were taking him to, when in fact they were taking him to jail.

A sentencing hearing will be held later. Court documents indicate he will argue to get from 3 to 9 years in prison.
