SOUTH BEND, Ind. — A registered sex offender from Beech Grove was caught taking pictures during a swim meet at the University of Notre Dame.

James Renick was arrested at the Shamrock Invitation swim meet last week, on January 24, after Notre Dame police received a report about a suspicious man taking pictures of the swimmers at the meet.

This isn’t the first time Renick’s been caught.

After Renick’s arrest police learned that he pleaded guilty to molesting two boys under the age of 10 in 1996, in Pennsylvania. During a search of his home in 1995 police found thousands of photos of young boys naked and in bathing suits, said the Allentown Morning Call

Renick was a television news reporter at the time and would put on black wigs, fake mustaches and carry around forged press credentials to take photos of the swimmers.

He was also arrested in 2018 for taking pictures of children at a swim meet in Ohio.

Renick is a registered sex offender for life, meaning it’s a felony to be on any school property.

Renick is in the St. Joseph County Jail, and will be in court on February 4.

Notre Dame released a statement:

Notre Dame police officers were made aware Friday, January 24, of an individual in the spectators’ section of the Rolfs Aquatics Center taking photos of swimmers competing in an invitational meet. He was arrested and also received a no trespassing notice. The case was referred to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office. This individual has no affiliation with Notre Dame and does not reside in this part of the state.
