Killing Chickens Raise The Price Of Eggs
You all have seen with your own eyes and pocketbooks a shortage of eggs. The ‘experts’ say the shortage is caused by the avian flu. But that’s not quite correct. The shortage of eggs is from the shortage of hens, a result of millions of hens being killed to fight the avian flu.
We reached out to Cort Acre Egg Farm in Seymour where the 2.8 million hens were put down and received the following press response:
Over the weekend, our Cort Acre Egg Farm in Seymour, IN tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), also commonly known as AI or bird flu. We are working with the Indiana State Board of Animal Health and the state veterinarian on best practices to combat the risk of spreading AI to other birds. We are continuing to monitor all of our facilities. It is important to note that while the risk to other birds (including migratory waterfowl, backyard poultry, and commercial poultry) from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) infections is high, the risk to people remains low. The Indiana State Board of Animal Health is monitoring the current situation. The USDA is monitoring animal infections and the CDC is monitoring human infections.
What we were trying to get an understanding of from farmers here in in Indiana is what are we dealing with when we’re seeing the killing of all these chickens? Is this the only way it can happen? Why the chickens are being killed? Bird flu? This is what we’re being told… Maybe I don’t quite understand the numbers or the economics, but that seems like a massive amount. That seems like a massive amount of chickens. I’m calling them chickens, alright. I’m using a catchall. I don’t mean to be disparaging in this… The question before us is. Is the destruction of the chicken the only thing that can be done? The follow-up question that I think is right to ask in this case is does bird flu exist in other wildlife, other birds? And are we going about destroying those populations? Are we only destroying the chicken population? Is destroying the chicken the only thing that can be done now? We’re not interested in prepackaged news blurbs… You’re a farmer and chickens are getting killed left and right. I have questions. Here’s a question: How much are you being paid per chicken? The chickens being killed. Wait, are you being paid? Is there a business in killing the chickens? I’m not. I’m not trying to accuse you of anything. I’m trying to understand what’s going on. Trying to understand what’s happening. So, if I could please find some farmers. Yeah, how I implore you. What’s going on? Explain it to us. We want to listen. We want to understand why this is happening and why is it happening now. There was no bird flu four months ago. Or there wasn’t a big deal.
