INDIANAPOLIS — A man, driving with nearly twice the legal limit of alcohol, crashed into two firefighters early Saturday morning on I-65 south near 38th Street, seriously injuring one of them.

State Police say Christino Rodrigo Alva, from Pueblo, Mexico, sped through an accident scene where the firefighters were already helping with another crash. The impact threw one firefighter into the air while the other got trapped under the car.

“The firefighters every single day put themselves in dangerous situations,” said Sgt. John Perrine. “At the service of others, they put their life on the line, and this morning (Saturday) was no different. ”

State Police say Rodrigo is facing charges of driving under the influence, causing serious injury, endangering others, having a BAC over .15, and driving without ever having a license.

“If there comes a point where you have to ask yourself whether or not you’ve had too much to drink before you drive, the answer is yes,” Perrine added.

IFD says both firefighters were taken to Eskenazi. One had minor injuries, was treated, and was released to recover at home. The other, with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, was admitted and is receiving excellent care.
