SOUTH BEND, Ind. — A man has been arrested after a chase in a stolen vehicle where he drove into the river.

Early Monday morning, around 2:00a.m. South Bend police investigated reports of a stolen vehicle at E. Lasalle Avenue right downtown.

While helping out the victim of the theft other officers saw the car on the road. They tried to pull the driver over, but instead he started to flee.

The driver of the stolen car, Aeryk Brant (23), got all the way to Boland Avenue and then into St. Joseph River.

While police were calling a rescue team to get Brant, he got on the roof of his car and jumped in. He swam to the other side of river and began to run.

With other police agencies working to find Brant, he was eventually arrested while at Saint Mary’s College. He was taken to the hospital to be checked out, then to St. Joseph County Jail on multiple charges.
