UPDATE: At 8:15 pm Thursday night, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said the second girl pulled from the pond had died.

GREENWOOD, Ind. — Two girls were hospitalized in critical condition after being pulled from a pond Wednesday night in Greenwood.

Chad Tatman of the Greenwood Fire Department said two girls were pulled from a retention pond at the Clearbrook Village subdivision right after 8 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of U.S. 31 and West Smith Valley Road.

Tatman was uncertain if the girls were conscious when they were rescued from the water by two Greenwood firefighters and two Greenwood police officers.

One of the girls was taken to Franciscan Health, where she died. The other was taken to Community South, according to a news release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Tatman said state conversation officers are handling the investigation now because the incident happened in a body of water.

Tatman said neighbors called 911 to report five people in the pond, but three of them had left by the time authorities arrived. The release from the DNR said the two girls were separated from a group playing in the water and did not come back up to the surface.
