GREENWOOD, Ind. — A Greenwood man is behind bars and a Bloomington woman is in the hospital after a Wednesday night police chase along US 31 in Johnson County.

Shortly after 8 p.m., Greenwood police officers tried to stop the car of Charles Warren III for a minor traffic violation at northbound US 31 and County Line Road.

Instead of stopping, Warren sped away.

Warren approached the red light at Stop 11 Road and ran the light instead of stopping. As he entered the intersection, he slammed into the car of 23-year-old Brianna Mayo, of Bloomington.

The force of the impact threw Mayo from her car and into the southbound turn lane of US 31. She slid across the pavement and came to rest under the front of an SUV that was stopped at the intersection.

After the crash, Warren swerved into the southbound lanes of US 31, jumped the curve, and drove into the Steak & Shake parking lot at the corner of US 31 and Stop 11 Road. Warren crashed into two parked cars and then got out of his SUV and tried to run.

Warren made it back across US 31, where he was arrested by Greenwood police.

There were two passengers in Warren’s SUV who did not flee. They were treated by medics and released.

Mayo was taken to Eskenazi Hospital with serious but not-life-threatening injuries.

Warren was checked at Eskenazi Hospital and later transferred to the Johnson County Jail. Police say he had multiple warrants from Marion and surrounding counties.

Charges against Warren are being reviewed by the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office.
