INDIANAPOLIS — Indy Metro Police have identified the two detectives who shot and killed a suspect on Sept. 1.

James Williams, 33, was fatally shot at a Marathon gas station on 21st Street after pointing a gun at police, according to IMPD. Williams was a suspect in a recent homicide and had a felony warrant out for his arrest.

The two detectives who fired at Williams are Sgt. Garth Schwomeyer, a 24-year member of IMPD, and Sgt. Erik Forestal, a 17-year IMPD veteran.

The shooting is being investigated by IMPD’s Critical Incident Response Team. A separate investigation is being conducted by IMPD’s Internal Affairs Unit. In addition, the civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will also conduct a review of the incident.
