COLUMBUS, Ind. — A student at Columbus East High School was hit and killed by a vehicle at a bus stop Monday morning.

Just before 7 a.m. in the 1900 block of South Gladstone Avenue, the student was about to get onto the school bus, when they were hit by an SUV. The vehicle drove off but was followed by a witness. The driver, 25-year-old Shiam Subramani, was later caught and arrested.

The student, identified as 16-year-old Lily Streeval, was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Subramani faces preliminary charges of leaving the scene of an accident causing death and passing a stopped school bus arms extended causing death.

In a released statement, the school said:

“As a school corporation, we experienced a devastating loss this morning.  Our hearts go out to Lily’s family, friends, classmates and teachers who loved and supported her.  She was full of life and enjoyed attending Columbus East High School.  Auto Tech had emerged as her favorite class and she was thinking about a career in this area.  We will miss her greatly.”
