INDIANAPOLIS — They say “three times’ the charm” when it comes to most things, but not robbing a gas station.

Indianapolis Metro Police received a call about an attempted armed robbery at the BP gas station on East Thompson Road around 12:50 Monday morning. The IMPD Robbery Unit arrived and began their investigation, but that wouldn’t be the end of their night.

Another attempted armed robbery report came in about half an hour later at the Speedway gas station on South Emerson Avenue. Less than ten minutes later, IMPD got another call about an attempted armed robbery at the Shell gas station just down the road.

By this point, police had a good idea of the suspect they were looking for: a white man, between 40 and 50-years-old, wearing a black T-shirt and jean shorts. Witnesses also told police the man used a silver handgun and drove a black Kia Soul.

Police were ready to continue searching for the suspect, but then officers spotted something interesting. Police saw a white man driving a black Kia Soul pulling into the parking lot of the Speedway gas station – the same station the suspect had tried to rob just minutes earlier. Police went over to the man and started asking him questions.

Officers quickly realized this man, identified as William Eland III, matched the suspect description. He was arrested peacefully and now faces three counts of attempted armed robbery.
