MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — At least 99 people are unaccounted for after a high-rise condo partially collapsed near Miami Beach.

A Miami-Dade County Commissioner told The Washington Post that they are unaccounted for because “they have not been heard from or have not called family or friends to say they are okay.”

So far, one person is dead and 35 people were rescued.

The Miami-Dade Fire Department said Thursday that first responders are involved in a massive search and rescue operation. Fire crews are tunneling under the building in a desperate effort to find survivors.

The 12-story condo tower was built in 1981 and had more than 100 units.
