LAWRENCE, Ind. — A woman has been arrested for stealing two cars this week, one of which had a sleeping 10-year-old boy in the backseat.

On Thursday, near 1100 South Sherman Drive, IMPD officers were chasing after a stolen car. The chase ended at 6200 Keystone Avenue, when officers were able to stop the car.

The driver, Brandi Mishelle Behning, 33, was arrested.

During an interrogation, Behning told investigators she stole another car — a Honda Pilot SUV — on Wednesday, when it was parked and running at a gas station on Pendleton Pike.

However, the SUV had a surprise inside: 10-year-old Jeremiah Jordan, asleep in the backseat.

Jeremiah’s mother told police she went inside the gas station for just a moment, and when she came back, her SUV was gone. An Amber Alert for Jeremiah was issued soon after.

Behning told police that she did not know Jeremiah was inside the car when she stole it. However, as soon as she noticed him, she parked the car at a Burger King on South Keystone Avenue, and left it running with the heat on.

Police say within minutes of the Amber Alert being issued, someone recognized the stolen SUV in the Burger King parking lot.

By the time police got there, Behning was gone, only to be arrested the next day for stealing a second car.

Behning faces preliminary charges of auto theft, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle and kidnapping with a vehicle.
