INDIANAPOLIS- A 72-year-old Indianapolis man is dead after he drove the wrong way on I-70 and crashed into a semi truck Saturday morning.

Indiana State Police identified John Slack, 72, of Indianapolis, as the victim of the wrong-way crash.

The crash happened just after 6 a.m. when Slack drove westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-70 near mile marker 22. Slack crashed head-on into a semi truck that was being driven by Nitishpal Bhandari, of Ontario, Canada.

Police say Bhandari was in the passing lane beside another semi when the collision happened.

Slack was pronounced dead at the scene. Bhandari and the other semi driver were not injured.

Authorities are conducting a full reconstruction of the accident and the investigation is ongoing.

A Clay County trooper was injured at the scene of the crash, when his patrol car was rear ended by a 21-year-old driver. That trooper was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
