INDIANAPOLIS — One central Indiana school district is delaying the start of the academic year because of coronavirus.

The Wayne Township School board voted Monday to push the start of the 2020-21 academic year from Monday, July 29 to Wednesday, August 12.

“Dr. Butts felt that it was appropriate to give another couple of weeks of time to see what’s going to happen regarding (coronavirus) cases — increase, decrease, that kind of thing,” said Michael Nance, school board vice president.

Nance said the delay will also give teachers a few extra weeks of preparation time.

Once school is back in session, students will be able to learn in the classroom or virtually, according to Nance.
