CARMEL, Ind. – A statue of a police officer in Carmel was vandalized Tuesday with red paint.
The paint was smeared on the officer’s hands and uniform and the phrase “it can happen here” was written on the officer’s back, according to Current in Carmel.
The Carmel Street Dept. was able to remove the paint without causing permanent damage, said Current in Carmel.
Police are reviewing security footage from the area to try and identify who is responsible.
The statue, titled “Oh, It’s You, Welcome,” is on the north side of Main Street at the Monon Greenway. It serves as a reminder of Frank Carey, the only Carmel police officer killed in the line of duty. Carey died in a shootout in 1900.
